There are specific mythological stories about Ashlesha Nakshatra, which are the foundation of its characteristics. The stories highlight the qualities that a person born with Cancer as their zodiac possesses. Let’s look at them one by one.
This story is about Vinata and Kadru. They were both two of the thirteen wives of Kashyap Muni. Out of the 13 wives, only Vinata and Kadru wanted to have children. Little did they know that they were chosen to tell stories about this Nakshatra. Kadru wanted many kids, while Vinata wished for a few with high intellect.
Both prayed and did all rituals which they believed would fulfil their desire. Eventually, Kadru gave birth to a thousand snakes and Vinata to two sons, Aruna and Garuda. Aruna has been known as the charioteer of the Sun and Garuda, the mount of lord Vishnu. Kadru has always had a problem with Vinata. One fine morning, Kadru bet Vinata to identify the colour of a horsetail.
One who recognises the right colour will win. The one who loses will have to become the slave of the other. Vinata agrees. Kadru sends his kids to paint the tail of the horse black, which was white in origin. Vinata falls into the trap and loses, and she and her sons become slaves of Kadru.
After this, Garuda, Vinata’s son, could not take it and never had a good relationship with the serpents. One can observe that Kadru and his sons cheated Vinata’s family. Cheating is an evident trait that can be associated with the Nakshatra.
The famous Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) is an Indian tale known in almost every Indian household, mainly among elders. This mythological story also relates to the formulation of characteristics with Ashlesha Nakshatra.
The demons created chaos in the universe, causing all the lords or devas to lose their powers. To tackle that, they went to Lord Vishnu, who suggested that the ocean be churned. They used Vasuki, the serpent, as a stiff string for this process. The demons (Rahu) took away the head of the Vasuki while the God (Ketu) kept the tail.
During this process, Vasuki started throwing up the poison. Lord Vishnu drank the poison so that churning was completed without any hindrance. This story indicates Secrecy as one of the characteristics of the serpent/ the Naga clan, as Vasuki spitting poison could have caused a problem with the process.
This story takes us back to the beautiful village of Vrindavan, where we adored Lord Krishna as a kid. There are mentions of the snake with multiple heads in lord Krishna's childhood stories. The underwater snake took advantage of the people when they used to go to the river to draw water and harm them.
Lord Krishna decides to teach it a lesson and gives it a tough time. The snake gets defeated and leaves Vrindavan forever. The snake was selfish and did not think about the people who were being affected. Hence, the trait of being selfish can be examined in this story.
